students with Mayor Palmer

On Monday, October 16, our students had an incredible opportunity to step into the role of "Mayor for a Day," with the journey starting at the historic Calhoun Depot and being greeted by none other than Mayor Jimmy Palmer. Mayor Palmer shared about his role as Mayor, answering questions from all of the Junior Mayors.  This experience was seamlessly integrated with Calhoun City Schools’ theme of "Heroes". CCS Superintendent Dr. Michele Taylor guided the students on the field trip that allowed students Josephine Bentley (CELA), Sadie Mason (CPS), Banks Layson (CES), and Alysha Kelley (CMS) to gain firsthand insights into the inner workings of our community.

The immersive journey took the students to essential Calhoun City locations, providing an opportunity to learn about local governance. The itinerary included stops at the Calhoun City Police Department, Calhoun City Utilities, Calhoun Gordon County Chamber of Commerce, Calhoun Fire Department, and City Hall. The pinnacle of the day was a memorable luncheon with Mayor Jimmy Palmer and City Administrator Paul Worley, where each student was presented with "a key to the city" as a symbol of their role as community ambassadors.

This hands-on experience allowed the students to see how our city ticks and to chat with local heroes. Students engaged in conversations, explored facilities and were provided with a platform to share their unique visions for an even better Calhoun. But the adventure doesn't end there. The four students will continue their journey by attending the upcoming City Council meeting on October 23rd, where they will have the opportunity to see democracy in action and engage with those who guide our city's decisions.

Dr. Michele Taylor, Calhoun City Schools’ Superintendent, was excited about the contest, saying, "Our 'Mayor for a Day' program is all about giving our students the power to help shape our community's future. We believe these young leaders can make a real positive impact on the community that we love and we appreciate Mayor Palmer taking time to hear from these impressive future leaders.”

Calhoun City Schools’ mission is to inspire all students to become lifelong learners in the pursuit of excellence. The "Mayor for a Day" contest is all about living that mission, as the district will provide further opportunities for students to shadow a range of local heroes in the coming months. #CCSHeroes #DiscoverTheHeroWithinYou
